About the series

The Smithson Series is a public lecture series bringing together leading architects, designers and thinkers working at the forefront of contemporary architectural discourse. Through a programme of established as well as emerging voices, the series explores the challenges facing the profession today, from sustainability to social equity and showcases architects who are actively rethinking the way we design and build for the future.

Founded in 2024 by Jesper and Alex , former students of the University of Bath the series grew from a desire to create a platform for open discussion around architecture and design, connecting students with professionals. The series takes its name from Alison and Peter Smithson , whose work and ideas form an important part of The University of Bath’s architectural heritage. Their influence provides a point of departure for a series concerned with the many questions that architecture faces.

Hosted within the Smithsons' architectural legacy, 6 East & 6 West located at the University of Bath, the series continues to evolve as a platform for exchange between practitioners, students, academics and the public.

Ultimately, the Smithson Series aims to encourage critical and open-ended conversations about architecture, asking how we design, why we design, and what the future of architectural practice might look like.
